The Founding Story

Message from Founder
Fahmida Zaman Ema

Although I don’t know many of you personally, I am so excited to have you here. Our love for Model United Nations and for AUWMUNC binds us together.

How did I fall in love with Model UN? In 2013, I was an exchange student at the St. Catherine University in Minnesota, USA. The Professor I liked was offering this course on United Nations and the final assignment was attending the National Model United Nations Conference in New York. I signed up for the class and led a team of 9 students representing Kyrgyzstan at the National Model UN conference in New York.

Like many of you, it was love at first sight (if that phrase is at all true). When I came back to AUW in August 2013, I noticed there wasn’t any MUN club not just at AUW but in Chittagong. I was so excited to share the knowledge and experiences of MUN that I didn’t lose a moment to register the AUWMUN club. Professor Herman Salton became the faculty adviser. I managed to convince several students that this new concept I was introducing them to was worth their time. So, begun the Asian University for Women Model United Nations club. AUWMUN club was the first educational institution based MUN organization in Chittagong and one of the few in Bangladesh.

What started as my desire to give AUW students a chance to feel the intense emotions I felt at the UN Headquarter in New York has itself become an institution. I was incredibly lucky to have a talented and passionate team. They believed in me when I stood in front of them to talk about how exciting MUN was. All our hard work has brought the organization where it is today. Now, it is your responsibility to continue our legacy. It is you who must carry the torch. It is you who represent the greatness of this organization.

I am so proud of every one of you, who has built a legacy like no other. Know that I will be rooting for you no matter what.

What is AUWMUNC?

Three-Four Days of Powerful Talks

Asian University for Women Model United Nations Club began its journey at a time when MUN was seen something as an “expensive version of debating”, alienating students from its prospective aspects.

The club was established by Fahmida Zaman Ema in Fall 2013 after she came back from attending the National Model UN Conference in New York. Zaman had a big hand in popularizing the concept among the students as well as in Chittagong by organizing MUN workshops for students of Chittagong. Zaman and the first executive board organized the largest MUN workshop in Chittagong in early 2014 with 130+ participants, many of which went to establishing Model UN clubs in their own educational institutions. Since its founding, AUWMUN Club has become the biggest and the most active clubs at AUW with over 100+ members!  We also had the honor of being served as Presidents by the talented Syeda Nafisa Nawal (2014-15). Nawal and her executive board organized AUWMUNC’s first successful National Model United Nations Conference in (2015, with 5 committees, and 200 participants).

Anjuman Tanha (2015-16) who served as the President and her board organized the second AUWMUNC conference aimed at International audiences (AUWIMUN 2016, with 5 committees and 250 participants). Additionally, Samiha Sahel served as the President (2016-17) and held the position of the Secretary-General (AUWNMUN 2017, with 5 committees and 200 participants). For these amazing contributions, AUWMUNC is immensely grateful to these hardworking and talented ladies who have been the driving forces behind the club.

AUWMUNC has earned reputation and respect of other Model UN clubs around the country for the member’s outstanding performances, organizing three highly successful conferences, and unparalleled diversity. Our club members have represented themselves in many MUN conferences ranging from within the country, such as the NSUMUN, CSMUN, CUMUN, RUMUN, etc. and also abroad e.g. EIMUN and HIMUN in Nepal as well as the recent KIITMUN in India, winning awards of every category and also as the official delegation team. They have also worked as Executive Board members and have done a splendid job so far.

The aim of the club is to provide a platform for MUN enthusiasts to voice their concerns and assist in nurturing their skills so that they can prepare for the world of International relations through the art of diplomacy.
